With sustainability central to our business strategy, last summer we started exploring ‘greener’ options for farm collection routes with the utilisation of electric trucks.
We have been in discussions with both Volvo and Scania and, in August, we trialled the new electric Volvo FM demonstrator on farm collection routes – this led to a saving of 144kg of CO2 when compared with diesel, in just one day of work! We were also impressed by the demonstrator’s performance and driveability with the demo handling our daily rounds very well.
Over the last few months, we have also been working closely with Scania Connectivity solutions, the gurus for Scania electrification vehicles, to explore various routes and options to future proof SJ Bargh Ltd. We expect to trial a Scania electric vehicle here in 2024.
We’ll keep you informed of how our trials progress, in the meantime, here are the four steps we’ve identified to embrace electrification and make the business sustainable:
1. Start with your why – sustainability demands or reducing your CO2 footprint.
2. Set your requirements – list your transport objectives, where and how far you need to go
3. Present a solution – from vehicles and charge setups to services that will maximise deliveries
4. Ready to roll – build and deliver the vehicle and set up the support network
